Usamah al-Qusi was born on 7/28/1954 in Cairo, Egypt. He pursued his general grade-levels studies in the Nuqrashi School. Thereafter, he obtained entrance into a college for medicine in the University of 'Ayn Shams, where he remained for five years studying medicine. During this period in time, he learned tajwid, memorized what he was able to of the Qur'an. Then he received the opportunity to make 'umrah along with his classmates on a college trip, during the month of Ramadan in 1397H (1977 CE). So this served as a starting point of his search for knowledge and his being guided to the path of the Righteous Predecessors.
In Makkah, he met some scholars from Saudi Arabia and other parts of the world. So he attended some classes in the Haram at Makkah, taught by Badi' ad-Din ar-Rashidi as-Sindhi, the Muhaddith of the land of Sind. He also visited his house and his library, which was filled with remarkable books and non-printed manuscripts. He subsequently moved to the city of Madinah and met Shaikh Muqbil Ibn Hadi al-Wadi'i, the Muhaddith of the lands of Yemen. At that time, he was studying in the advanced-levels section in the Islamic University of Madinah. During the time he spent in Saudi Arabia, he resolved on making two decisions, of which only one of them came through. The first was to abandon continuing his studies in the field of medicine and to instead preoccupy himself with studying the Islamic sciences. And the second was to stay permanently in Madinah, but this did not come through. So he returned to Egypt in 1398H (1978 CE) because Saudi Arabia did not grant him the iqamah (residential status) to remain there. Nevertheless, he did not go back on his other resolution to study the Islamic sciences, especially since he had gotten a taste of its sweetness during that year.
After returning to Egypt, he moved to Yemen towards the end of the year 1399H (1979 CE), when news reached him that his shaykh, Muqbil Ibn Hadi al-Wadi'i returned to his country of Yemen. So he stayed with him for six years drinking from his fountain of knowledge, night and day. And he would not separate from him except when he had to sleep at night. The first year was the happiest year of his life, in which he studied Sahih al-Bukhari under his shaykh. So this was the beginning of the class, which the Shaikh continued to teach for many years. He would attend all of the Shaikh's classes from after Fajr to 'Isha. Apart form this, he would research hadith from the books of the Sunnah in the Shaikh's library in between classes every time he got the chance to do so. And he would ask the Shaikh on what he found difficulty with concerning chains of narration, narrators and the ahadith.
He returned to Egypt in 1405H (1985) during which he printed his first book on the subject of adhan. In Ramadan of 1418H (1999), he made 'umrah and during this time, he met several scholars including Ibn Baaz, Ibn 'Uthaymin, 'Ali al-Halabi, Basim ibn Faisal al-Juwabirah and Khalid al-'Anbari. Subsequently he made another 'umrah in 1420H wherein he met Abdul-Muhsin al-'Abbad, Ibrahim ar-Ruhayli, Salih as-Suhaymi, 'Abdul-Malik Ramadani and Husayn al-Ash-Shaykh in the Prophet's mosque. During his trip to the United States, he met Salih as-Sadlan, Salim al-Hilali and Muhammad Musa Nasr. He has delivered several lectures in the United States at the Qur'an was-Sunnah Society's annual conventions as well as in the United Kingdom.
